Schafer Condon Carter Celebrates Twenty Years of Consecutive Growth

Chicago’s fast-growing independent shop reaches $150MM in billings.

Chicago, IL (October 13, 2009) – Schafer Condon Carter (SCC), one of Chicago’s fastest-growing independent integrated marketing agencies, marks its 20th year in business—and 20th year of consecutive growth—in October. Founded in 1989 with “two guys, zero clients and one apartment”, SCC will this year, in what has been a very difficult economy for most agencies, exceed $150MM in client billings across a wide range of brands, categories and channels.

SCC has earned a reputation for its scrappy, entrepreneurial approach to producing powerful brand ideas and non-traditional thinking. The agency’s client roster has grown to include Armour-Eckrich, Brunswick Corp., Solo Cup Company, New Chapter Organics, General Mills, McCain Foods, Land ‘O Lakes, Garvey’s Office Products, PepsiAmericas, Cobra Electronics, Kicker Audio, GoodFoods Group and ConAgra Foods.  Most recently, SCC was named brand agency of record for Buffets, Inc.’s portfolio of casual dining chains.

“There have been dramatic shifts in the business environment during the past two decades,” said Tim Condon, chief executive officer of Schafer Condon Carter. “But one thing that’s remained constant is marketers’ quest for fresh, innovative and creative thinking.”

At the core of the SCC’s success is its entrepreneurial culture.  In 2005, that inventive spirit resulted in the founding of West Loop Beverage, Inc., a brand incubator and marketer in the highly competitive soft drink category. West Loop’s first brand launch was Hogwash Juice Drinks, a line of fruity 10-net-carb, 35-calorie fruit drinks aimed at Moms with children 6-12.  Its distribution quickly spread throughout the Midwest and central plains states and the brand will sell over 6 million units in 2010.

Hogwash’s fast rise attracted the attention of Wis-Pak, a major bottling operation that packs Pepsi products for a network of Pepsi distributors.  What initially started as a packing and distribution partnership led to an offer from Wis-Pak to buy the brand outright. The sale of the Hogwash brand to Wis-Pak, which closed in September, is the second brand that SCC’s West Loop unit has successfully incubated and sold.

“One of the best testaments to the success of SCC’s entrepreneurial agency culture is our West Loop venture, where we are both the client as well as the agency.” says Condon. “It’s unique that, as an agency, we are inventing and building brands that are thriving in difficult market conditions while competing against major players like Coke and Pepsi. I’m very, very proud of our accomplishments because there is, perhaps, no tougher, more crowded category to compete in.”

SCC was launched as an integrated concept and has expanded its service offerings organically to include advertising, public relations, promotions, sponsorships and events, digital, and in-house studio production. Wholly owned operating units—including SCC|Grossman Public Relations, SCC|Digital and SCC|Gravitas—provide marketing counsel and integrated brand messaging stewardship across an infinite set of consumer touch points.

The Buffets Inc. assignment marked the fourth significant client win for SCC in 2009 and over $50 million in new billings in the last 12 months. In 2008, the agency announced multi-brand wins from Armour-Eckrich Meats, Cobra Electronics, Kicker Audio, GoodFoods Group, Garvey’s Office Products, and Land O’Lakes Foodservice.  SCC also expanded creative capabilities via its acquisition of Romani Bros.

New executive post created in response to growing client roster and opportunities.

Chicago, IL (May 11, 2009) – Tim Condon, chief executive officer of Schafer Condon Carter (SCC), announced today that the agency has appointed veteran marketing and advertising executive David Selby as president. This newly created post was established to expand the agency’s executive team and respond to the needs of the agency’s growing roster of marketers.

Selby, 52, is charged with fueling and managing agency growth including refining processes for maintaining SCC’s superior creative product, integrated idea-driven approach, and unique entrepreneurial culture.

Selby most recently served as executive director and co-leader of the marketing officers practice for global executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates.  Prior to that, he served as the first chief marketing officer for Potbelly Sandwich Works, helping to double the company’s size during his tenure. From 1997 to 2002, Selby was with Sears, Roebuck and Co., where he served in several senior marketing roles, eventually becoming the company’s top marketing officer.  His marketing career began at Leo Burnett where he spent 18 years working on leading brands including McDonald’s, Walt Disney and Miller Brewing.

“As SCC strives to best meet the evolving needs of our client partners, David’s experience as a successful client-side marketer will be an invaluable additional asset to their businesses,” said Condon.  “His agency background on some of the world’s top brands will also be of great value to SCC as we continue on our path of steady growth.”

“I’m extremely excited to be joining SCC’s leadership team,” says Selby.  “With its spirited entrepreneurial culture, outstanding creative product and organically integrated business model, SCC is uniquely positioned to provide the kind of thinking and approach that brand marketers are looking for right now. I look forward to helping to build on their legacy of trusted business counsel and highly creative thinking.”

Schafer Condon Carter is one of Chicago’s fastest growing integrated marketing agencies. The agency has experienced a run of new brand assignments recently, including last week’s announcement of an agency of record assignment on the Buffets, Inc. Ryan’s® Grill, Buffet and Bakery brand.

SCC wrapped up 2008—its 19th consecutive year of growth—by announcing new business from Garvey’s Office Products, GoodFoods Group, Land O’Lakes Foodservice and being named agency of record for Armour-Eckrich.  The agency also expanded its creative capabilities following its acquisition and integration of Romani Bros. into its integrated network of marketing units.

About David Selby

David Selby is an accomplished consumer and retail marketing and advertising executive who has served as the Chief Marketing Officer for two companies – Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Potbelly Sandwich Works. Prior to these roles, David spent over 18 years in the advertising agency business with The Leo Burnett Company, where he led several major accounts, including McDonald’s, Walt Disney and Miller Brewing.

Most recently, David served as an Executive Director and Co-Leader of the Marketing Officers Practice for the global executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates. David is an expert brand strategist and marketer and has helped build some of the world’s most powerful brands.

He serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the Marketing Committee of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, one of the Midwest’s largest not-for-profit human service providers. David holds a BA from Amherst College and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Selby lives in Glenview, IL with his wife Laura and three children.

Popular brand targets upscale market under Good Foods Group ownership.

Chicago, IL (March 17, 2009) – Schafer Condon Carter (SCC), one of Chicago’s fastest growing integrated marketing agencies, helps Good Foods Group to re-launch popular Chef Earl’s brand and product line. The effort aims to target the upscale food shopper while leveraging the brand’s strong heritage and maintaining its loyal following.

“The Chef Earl’s brand is all about celebrating the best nature has to offer,” says Kurt Penn, president of Good Foods Group. “That means respecting our planet and the people who buy our products. That message is resonating with a growing number of quality-conscious consumers.”

The Chef Earl’s brand was born in 1988, when Earl left his restaurant job to create the revolutionary line of fresh foods without artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. His salsas and humus developed a small, fiercely loyal following in the Chicago market.  In 2007 Chicago-based Good Foods Group, longtime pioneers in the natural food industry, purchased the brand and continues Earl’s commitment to all-natural ingredients and environmentally responsible operations.

SCC’s initial efforts focused on the redesign of the Chef Earl’s brand including the environmentally-friendly redesign of packaging for the complete product line. The agency is involved in all aspects of the business including branding, packaging, advertising, promotion, online, PR and new product development. SCC was named marketing agency of record for Good Foods Group in 2008.

“Chef Earl’s distinct and rich socially conscious heritage provided SCC with a great creative starting point,” said Tim Condon, managing partner of SCC. “Good Foods Group is looking to reach more consumers in their highly-competitive category, and we think this initial brand work is a solid foundation for future business-building efforts.”

About GoodFoods Group

GoodFoods Group, established in 2007, was created as a new type of fresh food company-one that put real value on respecting both people and the planet.  GoodFoods Group creates fresh, all natural foods with a true social conscience. Creative Statement

Good Foods Group wanted to reinvigorate and relaunch its Chef Earl’s
Brand – focusing on fresh, all-natural ingredients, gourmet quality, and incredible flavor. The packaging developed by SCC brings these elements to life on the shelf: rich colors and illustrations evocative of the all-natural ingredients, a classic but contemporary look to recall a time when everything was fresh and good, and recycled papers and soy-based inks – all of which are consistent with GoodFoods Group’s philosophy and approach to business.
